What a day

All's well that ends well right. I wish! For some strange reason I have been going to bed really early lately. I guess I am physically and mentally exhausted right now. Anyway, so I layed down for bed right at 9:00PM this evening when I was just about to doze off, the freaking phone rang.

Get this, a soldier in my unit (who is also in our emergency response team) calls me excited about responding to a drowning at the lake. My first question was "did someone die?" when the person says yeah but they were there and helped the authorities. Hardly something to get excited about.

Now I'm going to smoke another cigarette and think about the world for a while.

My thoughts and prayers goes out to the family and friends of the drowning victim.

The doctor

I am changing doctors no doubt about it. I am sitting waiting to see the doctor and this poor woman with an obviously sick infant has been sitting here ever since I got here.

She walked up to the front desk with her baby in her arms and said shouldn't you know that I have been here for 30 minutes and the lady behind the desk said no

This is crazy

Samsung to produce 100GB Flash

The South Korean company recently made its first step toward this goal with the announcement of a prototype 16GB drive based on flash chips. Flash memory has several advantages over hard disk drive storage: it consumes less power, it has higher resistance to shock, it's more reliable because there are no moving parts, it can read and write data faster, and it's silent in operation. But there's a major hurdle to mass-market adoption: it's much more expensive.

"This will be big once people enjoy how much faster and convenient it is to use solid-state disks rather than hard disk drives," Hwang said. "We're starting with 16GB and expanding to 100GB in a couple of years."

New Form of Biometrics

Biometrics have been around in Sci-Fi movies for years. Only over the last couple of years have we seen a vast amount of standard biometrics being used. The two most common are fingerprints and handprint scans. Eye scans are used, but mostly in the National Defense market. Well now Fujitsu has developed a new form of biometrics. They have developed a security device that uses vein patterns to verify identity

"The company's palm-vein recognition system has been available in Japan for just over a year and has already achieved some notable success. The Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, Japan's third-largest retail bank, began installing the system on its ATMs last October as a higher-security alternative to personal identification numbers. About half of the bank's 3,000 ATMs will have the system by September, and other major national and regional banks have also said they're adopting the system. "

Learn how to leave a voice mail

This really gets on my nerves. Please, for the love of all things good, when you leave a voice mail, do not say your phone number as fast as you can. I sit here and listen to a 2 minute voice message and then all of the sudden out of nowhere you try to squeeze your phone number into one second then hang up.

The very least you can do is leave your name and phone number at the begining of your message.

Sony PS3 to sell for $399?

Everyone's biggest concer with all of the next gen consoles is price. They are to be packed with several hundred dollars worth of hardware and they can really sell the units if priced too high. Given the specs of the PS3 $399 seems like a good deal.

"Merrill Lynch Japan predicts Sony will lose more than $1 billion on hardware during its next-gen console's first year on the market--a sum it may not be able to recoup. According to the latest issue of Japanese magazine Toyo Keizai, Merrill Lynch Japan Securities has recently calculated an analysis that the production of a single PlayStation 3 console will cost Sony approximately 54,000 yen to make ($494), as of its initial release in 2006."

Why do I have to be in charge?

Someone tell me why a group of 20 adults cannot be self sufficient. Beacause of my going back to college, work, and other personal issues, I have went inactive with the state guard. Now I am the youngest Captian in the freaking state (probably the country as far as the state guards)! I've got soldiers who have forgotten more than I will ever know. So when I leave command with an experienced soldier I figured all would be fine.

Tell me this, how can so many adults be so dependant on someone as young and inexperienced as me? There is no doubt in my mind that I handle the job and repsonibilities very well but I can't grasp the concept that these people have to have me in charge. Give me a break and step up to the plate people, you have a job to do!

There's a light at each end of this tunnel,
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you only try turning around

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me,
Threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them, however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
And breathe, just breathe

Life as I Know It: Analyze this

I too would like some answers on this, please take a moment and read this post.

I've got a Friend.....

During work today I had a very prolific epiphany. You see, I guess you could call me "a go to guy", if you need something, anything from something as simple as advice, support, or opinions, a lot of people come to me. Now if you need something done, be it anything from plumbing, heating & cooling, a new car, a place to live, or even tech support, ANYTHING, either I can handle it or I've got a friend that can help. This holds true even through some of the strangest of ordeals.

Well it dawned on me today that given my current situation, not I, nor any friend of mine can help with this one. Talk about feeling useless! This time of all times, when I need to have the answer or know someone that does......I'm lost.

DOD Hacker gets 4 months in prison

21-year-old Robert Lyttle, a Californian hacker who broke into the computer systems of federal agencies has been sentenced to four months in prison. Lyttle, who was part of a two man team called "The Deceptive Duo", was found guilty of unlawfully accessing computer systems of various federal agencies in April 2002. These systems included the Department of Defence’s Defence Logistic Information Service (DLIS) and Office of Health Affairs (OHA) and the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's (NASA) Ames Research Center (ARC). Lyttle has claimed that he was trying to help these organisations improve their security, if only he had asked their permission first he might not be heading for the slammer now.

U.S. District Court Judge D. Lowell Jensen handed down the sentence following a guilty plea on five counts of unauthorized access to government computers. As well as the four month prison sentence, Lyttle will also have to spend a further four months electronically tagged in home confinement and pay $71,181 in restitution. He will also undergo a three year period of supervised release. The defendant will begin serving his sentence on August 24, 2005.

4 months for domestic Terrorism? WTF!

The Smallest Good Deed

The smallest good deed is better than the grandest good intention, and a little kindness from one person to another is better than a vast undirected love for humankind. People may not be greatly swayed by our thoughts, but they could be deeply moved by our thoughtfulness.

The Captain on Q-tips and Trash Bags

I've shared this concept with a friend of mine some time back and she persuaded me to post about it.

I have realized over the last couple of years that my life as a single man can be measured by Q-tips and trash bags. Let me explain. First we have the Q-tips. Now when I purchase a new box of Q-tips, I buy the big 500 pack (for economical reasons of course). Now being a single man who lives by himself, I use 2 Q-tips a day. So in theory a box of Q-tips will last me 250 days, nearly 70% of an entire year! Everytime (which is not often), I buy a box of Q-tips, it is appearant that almost a year of my life has gone by.

Now you can see where I am going with the trash bags. I buy the big box of 50. This one is really depressing. Since I do not cook and I live alone, sometimes I have no trash to put out some weeks. Very seldom do I ever have to use more than one bag in a week. So with that equation in mind a box of trash bags lasts me around 95% of the year. So again, when I have to go buy another box of trash bags, it can feel as though I am putting a down payment on the next year.

Maltron Keyboard

If you hold your hand up, and look at your fingers, they do not create a straight line. Each of your fingers have a different length. With a conventional keyboard, you have to contort your fingers to flatten out to allow you to type. This contortion of your fingers is one of the main reasons people end up with repetitive stress injuries (RSI). With a conventional keyboard you have to conform to the keyboard, instead of the keyboard conforming to your fingers. With the Maltron keyboard, the keyboard conforms to your fingers for increased comfort and even improved typing speed.

With a conventional keyboard, only 8 of the 10 fingers get used. With the Maltron Keyboard your thumbs get more use then a conventional keyboard. Additionally, with a the keys being placed in a position more suitable to fit your fingers, you will be able to type faster. Many users report that the Maltron keyboard increased their speed by 20%, though each individual person will experience different results.

The heart of the Maltron keyboard is the key switch. The Cherry MX switches are considered the best keyboard switches in the industry. Cherry switches are known to last 50 million key strokes per key! Many keyboard intensive users report that their keyboards last over 10 years despite heavy usage of the Maltron keyboard. Most inexpensive keyboards made today use cheap membrane key switches. The reason they use membrane key switches is because they are extremely inexpensive. You can buy a membrane keyboard for under $10. But the down side of membrane key switches is their short life, and the damage they cause to the users by causing RSI problems. Other advantages of the Cherry MX key switches are their low and consistant tactile pressure required to activate the key. The Cherry MX key switch is specifically designed to reduce the the pressure to the users fingers and hands.

One of the major causes of RSI is the need to pound the key of membrane key switches to make it activate. This constant pounding takes it toll on the human body over the years. Cherry MX key switches activate HALF WAY thru the key stroke. This means that the user does not have to pound the keys into the base of the keyboard. This significantly reduced the stress to the human body. Use a Maltron keyboard for a day, and you will be amazed the the results!

24: The Game

Just another ordinary day in the life of Jack Bauer.

I have to admit, my single most addictive habit is Fox's 24. I got into the series just after a couple of episodes during season 2. It took all of 15 minutes until I was fully engrossed in the story and how it is written. I have not missed a single episode since, even if that means recording it and watching it later. I still have not seen season one but I am going to pick up the whole series on DVD.

So now they are going to bring it to the consoles. I swear if they mess this up, I'm going to be one monkey stomping fool! There are so many elements of 24 that would make for a great game, however, can a video game handle the twist and turns and roles of characters that the series juggles so well?

"24's signature hook is everything taking place in real-time, and SCEE Studios Cambridge is actually bringing that experience to the video game, too. Every few minutes, a 24-style clock will appear at the bottom of the screen, reminding players of how much time there is before they have to complete the current mission. Even though the events are all happening in real-time, however, it won't be so fast paced that players cannot take their time and explore. "

Check it out and let me know what the rest of the 24 fans out there think.

Faulty cable crashes Pakistan Internet

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - An undersea cable carrying data between Pakistan and the outside world has developed a serious fault, virtually crippling data feeds, including the Internet, telecommunications officials said on Tuesday. The system crashed late on Monday and was still down on Tuesday afternoon. Work in many offices across the country ground to a halt as people realized it was not one of Pakistan's regular, but usually brief, technical hitches.

"It's a worst-case scenario. We are literally blank," said a senior foreign banker who declined to be identified. An official at the Karachi stock exchange said Pakistan's main bourse was unaffected as it had its own internal trading system. Officials at Pakistan Telecommunication Ltd (PTCA.KA: Quote, Profile, Research) , which operates the link, said the fault was in an undersea cable and had been caused by a power supply problem.

Fixing it will entail an interruption for other countries using the link, including India, Dubai and Oman, one company official said. "To reconfigure the power supply system and set the fault right there needs to be an interruption of up to two hours," said PTCL official Mashkoor Hussain. He said telecommunications officials in those countries had been consulted and had given the go-ahead for the repairs. "Hopefully it will be repaired by tomorrow morning," he added. Airlines and credit card companies were among the businesses hit by the crash. "It's a total disaster," said Nasir Ali, commercial director of the private Air Blue airline. "We have a Web-based booking system which has totally collapsed." PTCL provided satellite back-up for the link, which meant some people were able to get access to a very slow Internet connection, Hussain said, but users complained it was too slow to be of any use.

TPS Reports

I have spent the last hour going through the YTD Gross Profit reports for my department and it hit me. The GPR's are my TPS reports. I am in office space hell! Except for one thing I got the memo. I got everyone that comes in each day (at least 3). I don't work in a cubicle but I do have a boss that likes to hike his leg up on the nearest object (no matter how high) and talk to you in that condescending manner.

I was sitting here going through our sales journal when I had to go to the restroom, guess who I had to walk into in the hall. So I stood there and talked about GPR's and GL's and COGS and AP until I was doing the "pee pee" dance waiting for him to be done with it. He then gets frustrated and says come on up to my office and we'll take a closer look at this. As I followed him to his office I ducked into a restroom and then went to his office. It's a good thing too, because I stayed up there for 30 minutes and didn't resolve a thing. Is it too much to ask for an early weekend?

Why is yawning contagious?

This topic has always puzzled everyone. Over the weekend I caught an old episode of Attack of the Show from G4 and there was this dumb "Don't Yawn" website. Now this little game only makes me yawn from sheer boredom, not because of yawning's contagious nature. However, it did get me thinking about it.

"Researchers recently found that yawning isn’t only catching among people; it is also among chimpanzees."

I guess this should teach me a lesson. I thought of this when Thumb drives first started to become popular. I could have made some money. Next time I'm gonna have to get off of my ass and put pen to paper and try to get a patent.

Files on a thumbdrive you insert into the FlashPoint ShareDrive can also be copied easily. Simply press the Load button on the ShareDrive and the files on the thumbdrive which are in a directory name LOAD are copied.

What happened?

Did everything just go to hell this weekend? I've been at work for less than 2 hours this morning and I got service problems popping up all over the country. Now, usually this would be a good thing. We make pretty good money on these serivce calls. The problem is, we only have two available techs on hand at the moment. Every call is high priority and have to be resolved quickly. I think there is a gremlin running across the country sabatoging shit just to make my life hell.

The Good, the Bad, and the Buffet

Tonight at church, we are having a special pre 4th of the July covered dish dinner. A member of our church is a Major in the Marines and he is going to speak to everyone about his time in Iraq and the price of freedom.

The covered dish dinner, also called a pot luck here in the South, can be dangerous and very tricky. There are literally hundreds of dishes to choose from. 18 varieties of mac and cheese, 10 buckets of KFC, and more greanbean cassaroles than you can shake a stick at. The problem is which mac and cheese to choose, becuase you only get one chance then you have to move along in the line.

The dessert table is overflowing with cakes and browines but I have eaten so much food I only had room to eat so of my buddy's wife's bread pudding. With the exception of a bad deviled egg I managed to walk away unscathed.

Samsung's big hopes in flash drives

Samsung Electronics recently announced a prototype 16GB drive based on flash chips. The South Korean manufacturer, which currently tops the list of flash memory suppliers, has big hopes for future products that will make use of flash chips, including drives that could replace hard drives in laptop computers.

Flash memory has several advantages over hard-disk drive storage: it consumes less power, it has higher resistance to shock, it's more reliable because there are no moving parts, it can read and write data faster, and it's silent in operation. But there's a major hurdle to mass-market adoption: it's much more expensive.

With the continuing fall in prices for flash memory, there's a bigger chance for such products to be made available. According to reports, flash memory prices dropped 40 percent last year alone

Ten Free Games Worth Downloading

Free Games? What, Like A Pong Remake?

Most free games are terrible and that's when you can even find them. Type the phrase into a search engine and the water goes murky with links to demos, flash games and a whole lot of online poker

Still, a little patience and a lot of browsing through sites like Acid-Play, GameHippo and Game Maker Games brought up a lot of hopefuls. That eventually resulted in this list of ten titles - in no particular order - that you should check out, just to see what gamers are up to in their free time. Trust me, some of these are good enough that you'd like to see them appear in a box one day.

For the record, all of the games below are free for download and not time-locked or level-locked. They are just there for you to play and enjoy. When you're done looking at the list, hit the sites above - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Lunch break with a bee

This is coming from one of my dear friends and I love her dearly. She sent me this email yesterday and I laughed so hard. I emailed her back and asked her if I could post it.

"Thought I might share with a few of you the events of my lunch. While I was at lunch I had to go by Verizon. Actually, I ran all over that end of town like there was someone after me. I had a ton of errands. Anyway, I went into Verizon and took care of my business. I came out, got about two feet away from my care and felt something "hit" my hair. It just so happened that I was standing where I could see my reflection in the back drivers side window. There was a big black bee trapped in my hair. I shook my head rather violently and looked back in the glass again, all the while saying a silent prayer that the bee was not stuck somewhere in the tangles of my hair. I didn't see anything so I did the customary "full body shiver", uugghhh, and proceeded to get into the car. I was just about to hop in when I happen to hear something and realized, with no amount of delight, that Mr. Bee was sitting patiently on my shoulder waiting for a ride back to the office. Now, you cannot imagine the dance that I did in the parking lot attempting to rid myself of my new found friend. When I was finally convinced that he might be gone, and made my best effort to examine my hair, back and shoulders, I jumped in my car and headed back to the office. I was so frazzled from this harrowing experience that I damn near ran off the road on the way back because my hair tickled the back of my neck and I was convinced that the Bee from Hell was still with me. Needless to say I survived the experience but I have no desire to get involved with any more flying insects, of any kind, today. Otherwise I may need a stiff drink."

The smell of formosa trees

I'm not sure if that is how you spell it, but there is something soothing about the smell of a formosa tree blooming. As I sit here on my front porch and wonder what will come, I am strangly comforted by the smell of that special tree in my front yard.

You see, this was a tree that I climbed as a child and year after year it continues to bloom and that smell reminds me of my youth and of all things good.

Dude you totally copied my whopper order

OK let me tell you a story about lunch today.
Me and 2 co-workers, we will call them bob and tom, went to lunch today at a local Mexican restaurant. Tom suggested to us that he might get a certain lunch special. Well, when I got to looking at the menu , what Tom wanted sounded good. So when it came time to order I went first and ordered what Tom said that he wanted. Then Bob ordered the same thing that I did, and let me tell you Tom got mad and said " Why don't you guys order something that I want" and ordered something else. We told him to order the lunch that he wanted, but he said that he could not have the same thing that we got.

Ok, maybe I'm dumb and just don't get it, or is it childish to get mad at someone else ordering what you want?

I need input on this one, what is the damn deal with order copying ??????

Math problems

As I stated before somewhere in this blog, I hate math. I can't stand it. I'm having to take college pre-algebra and I have to really concentrate on our tests. Well the teacher covers new material when class starts and then tests on last weeks material. That can screw me all up. But yesterday I was pumped and ready for the test and for something I can only claim as a miracle, is that I actually understood the material we covered in class. Needless to say, I was happy and proud.

Here's the problem. Like I said, I have to concentrate during our tests, but the damn teacher sits there and talks and talks and talks during the test. COME ON! Everytime I was sitting there losing my train of thought and I would sit there and say "shut up" sort of softly but he kept rambling away. Now for the most part, he was talking about math, however, the straw that broke the camel's back was when out of nowhere he says "a lot of people out today, must be some kind of bug floating around" FUCK man enough is enough! It's bad enough we are covering the chapters at warp speed and it's everything I can do to study, but dude you need to shut your hole and let me calculate man.

Yahoo closes chat rooms

After reports that some of its chat rooms were being used to promote sex with minors, Yahoo has pulled the plug on perhaps hundreds of such chat rooms. Yahoo received swarms of angry protests from several of its top sponsors, including companies such as PepsiCo Inc and Georgia-pacific. The sponsors stopped using Yahoo for advertising when it became known that adults were attempting to entice children into sexual encounters within some of Yahoo's chat rooms.

KPRC reported that in some cases, men were using web cameras to send lewd pictures to minors in chat rooms with such titles as "younger girls 4 older guys" and "girls 13 and under for older guys."

IBM’s Blue Gene/L still number one

The Top500 supercomputer rankings list still has IBM’s Blue Gene/L supercomputer as number one. The supercomputer, which is a joint venture between IBM and Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, has managed to receive a performance score of 136.8 teraflops per second with the Linpack benchmark. The system is currently located in Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore. Second place in the list is currently taken up by another Blue Gene system.

The No. 1 position was again claimed by the BlueGene/L System, a joint development of IBM and DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and installed at DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif. BlueGene/L also occupied the No. 1 position on the last TOP500 list issued in November 2004. However, the system was doubled in size during the last six months and reached a new record Linpack benchmark performance of 136.8 TFlop/s (“teraflops” or trillions of calculations per second). This system, once completed, will again be doubled in size and is expected to remain the #1 Supercomputer in the world for the next few editions of the TOP500 list.

You are the perfect drug!

I have had my share of highs and nothing could compare to this. I thought I have been to this place before, at one point in my life. I was wrong. It's an emotional high that I have never felt.

You inspire me.

You inspire me to live again, to be myself again, to free myself.
You inspire me to work harder, to think harder, and to know myself again.
You inspire me to be better, do better, and to want better.

You excite me.

You excite me and make me feel so good about who I am.
You excite me and cause me to think of you every moment of everyday.
You excite me and free me of my inhibitions and share so many laughs with me.

I've got so many people telling me, "boy, you've got it bad", and I simply tell them "no, I've never had it this good".

Thank you, for being you.

If you work in a place that uses Excel and people are network to a distant printer this is so easy to pull off and so frustrating to those who you attack. When the mark is away from their desk and they leave a spreadsheet open, simply scroll all the way down to the bottom right corner of the spreadsheet. It's a long way down there! Once there, just type in a single period (.) and bring the page back to its original location. Now when they print this spreadsheet, it will print everything all the way down to the last period. Most people will never even find the problem.

Nyko Movie Player

"Seventy-five movies in the palm of your hand? With the upcoming Movie Player accessory for Dock Connecting iPods, the answer could be “yes” by November, 2005. Over the iPod’s short lifespan, accessories have already evolved Apple’s digital music player into a mini-PDA, voice recorder, photo box, laser pointer, and walking iGuy. Now video game accessory maker Nyko plans to take a giant evolutionary step forward: its Movie Player morphs any iPod, iPod mini, or iPod photo into a full-fledged video player and recorder. Plus, thanks to a high-resolution color screen, it also displays considerably more detailed digital photographs than even Apple’s own iPod photo. "

Exams... ARGH

I am in no shape to take this exam. The teacher is always late so I have some time to sit and blog my little butt off. It's not a tough exam, just flow charts and psuedocodes, but my mind is in another place right now. I just want to blow this class and get home. Work was a real pain in the ass today, the president of the company sort of chewed my ass. Appearantly he was on a ass chewing rampage because every department head in the offfice got chewed.

Take a deep breath, close my eyes, go to my happy place (which is strangly colorful) and make it through the day. After class I have to visit my soldiers. They haven't seen me in a month or so. My hair is getting long and I'm brandishing a nice goatee. They might flip out to see the real me. I guess I never mentioned that I am actually a Captain (0-3) in the State Guard.

Teacher is in... bye.

Crazy is right

I'm not laughing at you Sue ZQ I just think a crazy lady story is good to hear from time to time.

Crazy in LA - Part 2

So when I arrived home to make sense of the madness, I began to get pieces of the story. Apparently, she was sitting outside talking on the phone (she has imaginary conversations alot) about how we, everyone in our building, were all trash. We all beat our kids and live like, and I quote, "skanks." Ok this coming from the freak who, on more than one occassion, finds it amusing to come outside with nothing but a t-shirt on. Ok mind you, she lives UPSTAIRS so if your glance happens to fall that way. . . . . that's right. Its like welding w/o a mask. MY EYES!!!!

So anyhow, the neighbors that used to live upstairs from us had told us that she was like this. She threatens to call the authorities on anyone who has kids and claims that they're being abused. Ok, she doesn't call anyone. She's avoiding the cops as it is. But the fact that she threatened was enough to get my blood boiling. Don't mess w/ my babies!!!

So this goes on between my boyfriend and her for a couple of months. But she will not say a word to me b/c she knows that I'll whip up on her. One morning, about 7:30, I get a call again. She's cursing our upstairs neighbors b/c one of them is parked over the "center line." Two tires on our side, two tires on her side. And racial slurs at that. Screaming! So they call the cops on her b/c she was being too much I suppose. They come and she's in her apartment w/ the door locked. Well b/c she didn't answer the door, there is nothing they can do. Sounds like BS to me. Oh, but I'm not done yet...

To hear her smile

Isn't it wonderful to actually hear the person you care about smile. It might sound strange, but you can actually hear someone smile. I heard her amazing smile, her beautiful glow that is so addictive, I could feel her eyes light up and I felt her excitement going through me.

Teddy Ruxpin goes digital

This thing always freaked me out as a child and now he's back.

"The new version of the toy, which moves its eyes and mouth while singing and telling children's stories, contains audio and animation data on digital cartridges. When launched 20 years ago, the bear operated on analog cassette tapes. "

A good friend of mine's computer has been down, so he's been going crazy not able to blog.

Read his latest post.

I've joked with Tara, that one day we will have MethaBlog Clinics popping up. I say get in line.

A bunch of blog networks listed

Taken From Scobleizer: Microsoft Geek Blogger

Blog Herald has a nifty list of blog networks.

These are things like weblogs Inc, which includes blogs like Engadget.
Why do networks matter? Advertising.

The bigger networks will be able to sell advertising and pay their member bloggers.
Speaking of which, there's a session on right now at Supernova where they are talking about advertising in video games.

There's a company, Massive Incorporated, which does nothing but sell product placements in video games.

And that's only a small piece of what they are talking about.

Mobile Personal Entertainment Centre

Office Antics Part 4

When two (or more) people are working at desks that are put next to each other, switch their telephone cords. With all those cables lying around it will take some time before they find that one out!

Put a peice of onion or a clove of garlic inside the mouthpiece of a phone. Give it some time for it to fester and build up a strong odor. Then call them and keep them on the phone for as long as possible.

It is always a good habit to lock your computer before heading off for coffee or a smoke. When someone forgets and leaves a Word document or an email open, type a single word somewhere in the text. “f*ck” or so will do nicely. They’ll never notice and send it out.

Get a hold of someone's cell phone and change the greeting banner to say "NO SERVICE". Many cell phones have greeting banners on them that you can personalize to say whatever you want them to and it stays on there when you're not using your phone. Also, when there is no service where you are, most cell phone companies have a banner that pops up on your screen saying "no service".

This is for that special person you just cant stand in the office, the one who talks on the phone all day with their boyfriend/girlfriend and gets personal e-mail all day. Go into their e-mail and change their defaults to autmatically "blind carbon copy" their boss or supervisor. Heads will roll!

And finally simply pop out the 'm' and 'n' key on someone's keyboard and reverse the two. Any flat tool will work. Just pry it with little pressure and they will easily come right off. Then just sit back and watch the confusion.

Insert clever title here

I've drawn a blank for the title of this post. I thought I'd give everyone an update. Things couldn't be going any better. Her and I have talked on the phone for hours at a time.

The funny thing is, I usually can't stand to be on the phone for more than 45 seconds at a time. My cordless phone battery is getting where it won't hold a charge that long. So I actually went and bought a new battery for it.

I try to stay off the Internet so I won't miss her call. Its a damn good thing I can Blog from by BlackBerry. I would lose my mind.

I am filled with so much excitment and hope. We share so much its crazy. I can't wait to see what happens next. I can't stop thinking about her.

Dr. Suess on computer crashes

Dr. Seuss Explains Why Computers Sometimes Crash (Read this to yourself aloud - it's GREAT!)
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts Your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

Electronic Component Jewelry

Perfect for that snerd (sexy nerd) in your life.

"No doubt we’ve all seen “techno jewelry,” little bits of greenboard earrings and the like that were fashionable for almost two whole weeks in 1996. That’s why I almost skipped over this gear from ZelleStyle—I’m glad I didn’t. Not only are there a variety of attractive (and sometimes surprisingly delicate) bits of jewelry made from electronic components, there are even some moderately masculine things like belts made from IDE cables and Ferrite Bead necklaces, as well. Definitely worth a once over, as the pricing is pretty reasonable. It’s enough to make you want to go to one of those fangled “raves” and talk about “unix” while sipping “smart drinks.”

To feel alive again

For the last several years, there has been something missing in my life. I have spent all this time looking for something that has been in front of me and I was trying to be too rational about things.

Sometimes you really can't see the forest for the trees

They next few days and weeks are critical. I have never been so sure about something like this in my life.

I truly believe that there will be a happy ending to this story.

From the Heart

I want to say thanks to Jackie. I have made some new friends during my blogging experience and my faithful friend has stuck by me (Heifer). Thanks for all of your support. You have really helped me thru so many difficult times in my life. I hope you know that I love you!

Follow your heart

I got this from Channel 9, I felt it was worth sharing. It seems to fit my current situation.

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary“.

Ok, today is the best day of my life!

I got what I wanted and so much more from the reply from that "special someone". I no longer have to beat myself up everyday and wonder what might have been. Even if nothing happens after this, I can rest knowing that my feelings where matched. Wow, what an amaxing feeling this is. Just to feel the same emotions coming from her. At one time I gave up and moved on, but something inside of me just would not let her go. I pray a little more these days and I always ask the lord to send me someone that is everything I need and God did just that. It's amazing how we hide God's miracles behind what we call "rational thought".

With that said, I am overwhelmed and I would like to share one of my favorite quotes. I have always loved this quote (though I never have used it until last night). It comes from Lord Byron , an English poet, in which he wrote to the last great love of his life in 1819. I shared this quote in my letter to her and maybe, just naybe she too will be the last great love of my life.

"My sweetest treasure, I am trembling as I write to you, as I trembled when I saw you."

Office antics Part 3

Mac Scripting:
Make a Shutdown script and save it as an applet with a name that in no way implies its true nature. Then set it up to run on startup or on login. Now whenever the victim starts up or logs into the computer, it'll shut down. This one is killer for obvious reasons.

Birthday Chair:
Disassemble a musical birthday card and carefully tape it underneath a coworkers chair so that when the chair is leaned back, the card activates.

Word hack:
Subtle in execution, but so hot when it yields results. Change the AutoCorrect on a coworker's Word settings such that when they type in, say "facilitate," it gets auto-corrected to "faliatiate". Don't have the patience to wait for him to type facilitate? Change "the" to "teet", and so on.

Power failure:
Take a co-worker's monitor power cable and run it through a wall or under one's cube into a separate power strip/surge protector so you could turn his monitor on/off at your leisure.

Copier fun:
Put a piece of clear tape on the glass of the photocopier. This is fun, but it has a second part to it. If the sheer frustration of someone having to make 100 copies all over again isn't enough, you could try making 100 copies of the piece of tape, and then load the paper into the paper feed. Funny to see people go crazy trying to figure out why the copy is coming up with this square on every page.

One of those days!

Come on, it's Friday, I am suppose to be having a good day.

I forgot to pay my phone bill so the bastards cut it off. I had to run around town until I found a place where I could pay my bill and it is an instant payment. I have to be connected, if one of my lines of communications goes down, I go into panic mode. But I got that taken care of.

I guess I have been so wrapped up in work and college, that I forgot to pay a few bills. I noticed a small stack sitting on my kitchen table. So, again I am trying to get everything caught up.

I'm scared to death to get the reply from the email I sent to that "special somone" last night.

But something did happen to me on the way to pay my phone bill that made me smile. I was at a traffic light in the turn lane, when I looked over at the car to my right. There was this little old lady in a brand new Buick. She didn't look over at me, but she had a little red haired dog looking out her window. It was a cute dog, so I smiled, and I kid you not that dog gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen from a dog. It was so cute, I was smiling all the way back to the office.

The best day of my life

I am reluctant to post this, but I've been drinking so what the hell, why not. I feel so liberated. I finally got to tell someone very special to me how I feel about her. No matter the outcome, I know we will always be as thick as thieves.

Wish me luck everyone.

Crazy in LA

Crazy lady lives in building across from mine, approximately 16 feet from my front door. She is really something else. She owns the building, a quadriplex, and has never rented to anyone. She has a beat up BMW that she drives around w/ out of state tags that expired in 1998. The building has windows busted out in every apartment and the grass is taller than me (I'm 5'4".)

When we moved in to our apartment she was living in the bottom one directly across from us. This one had insulation board over the broken windows and no door handle. Don't ask me how she got in and out of there b/c for the first 6 months of us living there, I can count on one hand how many times we actually saw her. The couple who was living in the apartment next to us had recently split up (she left his weird *ss) and it was only a matter of time before he (which shall be called Bird Man) and crazy lady (which shall be called Crazy Lady) befriended each other and "hooked up."

For a few months she lived with him next door to us. They were great together. They got along really well and were very neighborly to us. Everyone who had lived in our building before us had had a problem w/ her. But we didn't understand why. She liked us. Liked.

They later moved into her building in the apartment upstairs from the one she used to live in. For a few weeks they had been noticeably cold to us but we just thought maybe they want their privacy. Oh no, there was a problem brewing. They became extremely weird - even for them. We used to see them at least a couple of times a week. Meet up on the occassional smoke break. But it had been weeks since we'd seen them. They stay locked up in that apartment. "What do you think they're doing?" we wondered. Smoking crack? We were stumped. Then one day, Crazy Lady had it out with my boyfriend. She just went nuts. He called me and said that if she didn't shut up I was gonna have to beat her *ss. More to come...

Ch Ch Ch Chia.....KEYBOARD?

A few days ago I posted about some office antics part 1 and part 2. Well, I ran across this breaking news.

Why I like Thurdays

I figured out why I like to have a few drinks on Thursdays. First being the most obvious, payday. My classes are done for the week , and Fridays around the office are slow so I like thurdays. I get to take my full hour for lunch. I'll go by Rhino and chat a little while. After work I pass by the liquor store on my drive home so I pick up a couple of 6 packs of Guiness Extra Stout and usually polish one of them off that night and slowly drink the rest over the weekend.

Father's day is coming up and I've got to find something for dad. He hates it when we get him anything but I feel bad if I don't do something for him. His a simple country man who hate technology, so gadgets are out of the question. He has all the clothes he needs. He is so hard to shop for. He's retired and spends most of his time tending his farm. The only two things he watches on TV is Law and Order, and the Braves when they are playing. I thought about taking him to a game on year, but he said hell no to that. He hates crowds. I try to go and see my folks a couple of times during the week and its sort of tradition that I have dinner with them on Sunday evenings. I'm looking forward to spending some time with him this weekend.

Speed Kills !!!!!

I am currently Atending College to get my basics and I’m taking a basic algebra class.
Due to the summer semester being short we have to cover twice the material that we would normally have to cover. At this current point I’m a full chapter behind the class, and i have heard that if I don't get a good grasp on algebra that i will be " Chewed up and spit out" at the university that I’m looking at attending to get my BSEE.

Hopefully next semester it will be a little slower, and I can catch up.

Faced with a few challenges

In the last month I have decided to go back to college, get back in shape, lose some weight, try to smoke less (trying to quit would be too much), grow my hair back out and have some fun again.

I have no idea what prompted these decisions. All I know is that I am swamped with college, sore from working out, hungry from dieting, I've got a head full of hair that I can't do anything with, and I don't have much time to have any fun.

I think I should have taken it one step at a time.

"The HAL is a cube server case that was decommissioned by one of my customers. I took the old server home. It was only a Pentium III 800, so I orphaned the parts and set the case in my shop and just kept looking at it over the next two weeks. I decided what I could budget and what I had to beg for. The first thing I did was paint the case black. I watched the movies 2001 and 2010 a couple of times and came up with my concept of the HAL core from the pod bay which looked like an old console TV super-sized."

Where's my Captain's Wafers?

Now that I got my tech info out this morning, I thought I'd post a thought.

First off, I am not a breakfast person. I'll take my mug of espresso and go until lunch, however this morning I found myself a little peckish. Usaually when this happens I'll go to the vending machine and buy a pack of the grilled cheese flavored Captain's Wafers. When I got to the machine, I almost punched in E1 for my crackers and I had to look twice. They were not there! In a panic of having to choose something different I searched the "cracker row" and wait a minute the crackers are gone! They moved the crackers two rows up. Whew, good at least I can have my Captain's Wafers. Here the problem I have. The "E" row was already too high to have crackers on to begin with, now two rows up, my crackers have to freefall that much more. I think the vending machine company knows that this will crush the bottom two crackers in the pack and they do this intentionally....Damn them!

A Windows PC Instead Of A VCR And DVD Player?

It is not uncommon to see more than a half a dozen remote controls lying around living rooms that accommodate an equal number of TVs, DVD players, CD consoles, stereo receivers and set-top boxes. One of Microsoft's propositions with its Windows Media Center Edition (MCE) is that the system eliminates this hodgepodge of remotes and systems and offers a single PC that does it all. The system is not so much about appeasing the geek demands of PC enthusiasts and do-it-yourselfers, but instead is intended to serve as an all-in-one box that requires no tweaking and building by the consumer.

Optware Holographic 30GB Card

Optware, the leaders in everything holographic, have a new type of media. This is roughly the size of a credit card and hold 30GB worth of data. It is called the Holographic Versatile Card (HVC) and is going to join the lines of Blu ray and HD DVD for the throne of the next big media. Right now the HVC seems less practical in home uses because the HVC reader costs $1800 dollars while each 30GB card is going to be under $1. For large server purposes this seems more practical.

I'm wondering if these might not be a good console gaming storage device. Hmmm? Hmmm?

I have always liked a good animated movie. Movies like, Akira, Fist of the Northstar, Golgo 13, Ghost in the Shell, and Armitage the Third, are some of my favorites. I picked Appleseed up last night and decided to give it a try. I have never seen a movie so beautifully animated. Appleseed is a perfect blend of classic anime and CG. The enviroments are so wonderfully rendered, it was hard for me to pay attention to the story because I was amazed by the realism and depth.

The story was that of your typical futuristic Japanese anime film. However, it grabs you quick with a lot of faced paced action the develops into a great plot. Appleseed is a definite own. The music was quite a work as well, with the music of Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx, Boom Boom Satelites and others. I will be picking up the soundtrack.

I'm only happy when it rains

Let me tell you, I must be one happy person these days. It has rained seemingly non-stop for the last two weeks and with Arleen making her way through, sunshine is a distant memory. However this weather has allowed me to get a lot accomplished around the house. Not wanting to breach the threshold of the front door, I have cleaned the house, finished my laundry, and completed 50% of my homework assignments all in one day. It makes me feel like I've actually gained some ground.

Danger could be my middle name, but it's Adam

I am a huge Eddie Izzard fan and as I was doing some homework I decided to watch Glorious again. I can watch his stand up acts over and over again. Dress 2 Kill is my all time favorite, I can recite the entire show and still laugh uncontrollably no matter how many times I've watched it. If you have never heard of Eddie Izzard, I strongly recommend watching his DVD's.

Office Headaches

Man I am ready to get out of here and have a quiet weekend.

As stated somewhere before in this blog, we have a sister company down in Puerto Rico, and I am the one that handles all things "Del Caribe". We also do a lot of business with a few companies in Singapore. Talk about polar opposites. Puerto Rico likes to wait and wait and wait about getting any information to me or the right information for that matter, so it is a constant battle with them going back and forth until we both agree on what it is they need. Now Singapore is the exact opposite, they know what they want and they want it yesterday! So its hurry up mode the minute I get a call from Singapore. God help if they have to wait on something. They hound the shit out of me until I get it done.

A good companion for one's MP3 Player

I picked this up last night to allow me to listen to my Zen Micro in my car without any compicated modding. The sound quality is that of the radio but it is really easy and for $30 I can't complain. Another unique feature of this vs other FM modulators is the fact that if you have MP3's on a thumbdrive you can simply plug it in and use the controls on it to listen to them. It comes with an audio cable so if you have an Mp3 player you are ready to rock. I tried it out on the way to work and I am pleased for the price.

Why Thursdays?

Why do I feel compelled to consume vast amounts of alcohol on thursday nights? I think it stems from my time in the army. Every Thursday I drink more than I do all weekend. My hair stylist and her "friend" came by my house tonight and we chatted a while and consumed plenty of guiness extra stout. I guess I am just gearing up for the weekend.

Office antics Part 2

I though I would share a few things I like to do around the office to pass the time and piss people off. I had a friend of mine that used to work in the engineering department where I work. I would call him and if he didn't answer I would sneak to his cubicle and turn everything upside down, his phone, keyboard, chair, everything I could in the amount of time I had. Another one (also one of my favorites), I would take his mouse and drag out the slack and hang off of his desk with a post-it note on it that read "Goodbye cruel world, signed mouse". It's depressing to come back to your cubicle and see that your mouse has commited suicide.

Another great one thats hard to do these days, is to remove the ball out of someone's mouse. Since more and more people have optical these days, putting a little piece of transparent tape over the eye is just as amuzing. And if you really want to piss some people off. Sneak up to the main printer and put a ream of pink paper in the tray and watch as people print out tons of stuff in pink.

Office antics

People like to use the meetings and appointment features of Outlook here in my office. I never accept them, I love the barrage of pissed off emails and phone calls I get when people get my reply as declined or tentative.

The last meeting sent to me was a training class that I have to give on some software we use and it is to be held in my office, in which I declined to all and responded "why my office?". It's good to stir people up in the middle of week.

Halo goes to the movies?

Ok, I am a huge Halo fan as are many many other people. This movie better live up to the games!

"Plans for a high-budget Halo movie are being pushed ahead by Microsoft, which delivered copies of the Alex Garland penned script to Hollywood studios earlier this week - with a high price tag and tough conditions attached. Messengers dressed as the Xbox series' iconic hero, the Master Chief, arrived at the offices of many major studios on Monday to hand in copies of the script, for which Garland - the British author of The Beach and 28 Days Later - was paid $1 million."

Ok, ladies, listen up. It’s an MP3 player, with standard features, and up to 512Mb memory. It’s shaped like a lipstick, and uh, that’s it. And if you fall for this gimmick… then, well then, gee, I don’t know what to say.

2GB Pocket Rocket

Pocket Rocket?

Couldn't they have named it something a little less perversive?

Flash drives are pretty boring, but we’ll throw Memina a bone today. Memina, a Samsung offshoot, has created the 2GB Pocket Rocket, an 18 MBps flash drive that is 2x faster than most optical drives. The Pocket Rcoket has a “no-lose” swivel cap—whoa!— and uses Samsung SLC silicon.
A 4GB at 30MBps version is also in the works. The speed at which these things are improving are impressive. It’s frustrating that you can’t really get too many over-the-counter phone with a few GB of flash built-in. Can’t be too far off.

Annoying college students

The one thing I thought I'd enjoy about taking night classes, is the fact that I would be taking my classes with other people that work for a living and are more mature. However, I was complaining about whoever used the computer last had all the settings screwed up and this old bastard beside me says "yeah its always the computer" , I almost monkey stomped his old ass.

Then this other woman in front of me, who is a major kiss ass, was talking about her boyfriend and how he will be making $80,000 after he completes his mechanics training. In this part of the world no one makes that kind of money working on cars. She then turns to the rest of us and asked if anyone one of us makes that kind of money. Again I was ready to monkey stomp.

I am starting to dislike people (stupid people that is)

I heart my Zen Micro!

My Zen Micro

So far so great! This thing is super easy to use and navigate. The Zen Micro is even compatible with Outlook! Awesome, I know my BlackBerry has all that too but hey, it's another way to stay connected and organized. It seamlessly syncs with Outlook's contacts, tasks, and calendar. You can use WMP 10, explorer, or the software which is nothing more that a gate to explorer to load music.

Using it as a portable drive seems easy enough, just drop what you want in the Data directory. You choose how much you want it to use for storage and your off! My one complaint (not a big deal) is that you can't browse your files like you do your music. They could have done that real easily. Maybe there will be a firmware update to correct this.

The Zen Micro also has a FM radio built in with 32 presets that you can name, autoscan and recording. That's right you can record what your hearing on the radio and store it like a audio file. Bring it home and drop it on the PC.

Creative, please forgive me for trying the M:Robe-100 first.

A real life George Costanza

One thing I've noticed, since I have started this blog, I seem to remember events that happen in the day much better. All because I feel this uncontrolable urge to BLOG IT. But it sure makes for good content.

After a long day of homework, housework, and internetting, I drove over to the local store for a Diet Coke and a pack of cigarettes. I walked to the back where the drinks are and this short, plump, and balding man, stood there in my way, trying to decide which Cola he wanted. Me that's easy Diet Coke, period. So I stood there for just a second and said "excuse me". He looks at me as if I slapped his mother (I just want my Diet Coke) and he quickly grabbed his drink and went up the aisle to the register, very quickly waddling up there.

Now I see why he was in a hurry. He had to write a check. Great, I just wanted a Diet coke and a pack of smokes man. But wait, he stands there as if waiting on something. The cashier just stands there and I with no choice stood there. Just when I was about to say "excuse me" again, this little girl and I assume her mother, wife of strange man, comes running up to the register (where the bloody hell did they come from? It's a small freaking store!). Both of them carrying some Misc groceries. Great all this for a Diet Coke and Smokes!

So then Strange Man pulls out this Trifold wallet that appeared to have his previous 5 years of tax documents in it. I don't know if you remember that episode of Seinfeld, where George couldn't sit upright because of his massive wallet, but this was it! I am not exagerating either, he had one of those thick rubberbands holding it shut. Dear lord, just let me have my coke and I will forgo the cigarettes!

He's looking through this mini library of congress for a minute then pulls out his checkbook again. He then proceeds to write the check. At this point, wife and child has already took the groceries and went back to the car. Oh and nothing was ever said until the cashier asked for his driver liscence #, "George" mumbles a string of incoherent numbers and looks at us both as if he was withholding a government sercet. Of course the cashier had no idea what he said so she asks to see his licsence. DEAR GOD NOT AGAIN! He pulls out the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich from his back pocket and removes the rubberband, digs and digs until finally she got the number, he got another valuable receipt that he must keep for the next 5 years and I finally got my Diet Coke and my pack of smokes.

Can I just go back to work.....Please?
