Robo Soldiers Coming Soon?
This is the Berkeley lower-extremity exoskeleton (Bleex). The Bleex 1 has been in the works for a while and it seems they have begun work on the 2nd prototype, the Bleex 2. The exoskeleton system has two hydraulic leg braces that include 40 electronic sensors, a monitoring computer and an internal-combustion engine. The exoskeleton is attached to the legs of the soldier and allows for backpack loads upwards of 220 lb. to be carried with ease.

Sony Walkman best gadget of the last 50 years
What's the best gadget of the last 50 years? The iPod? The mobile phone? The USB flash drive? The TiVo? No, no, it’s none of these, according to PC World magazine - the best gadget of the last 50 years is in fact the Sony Walkman.
As the magazine notes, no one had quite seen anything like the Sony Walkman when it first appeared. The battery powered blue and silver cassette player changed the social landscape, with people suddenly listening to music on the move, whilst they walked down the street or sat on the train or bus.
Its interesting to note that now, some 26 years after the Walkman appeared, Sony is updating the little device. Reincarnated as an MP3 player, the new Walkman will be available in two capacity sizes - 20GB (NW-A3000) and 6GB (NW-A1000).

Maglite Goes LED
Just ask any of my friends and they will tell you that I have a fascination with flashights (could be because they are shiny), I really love LED flashlights. The problem with most is that the light just doesn't carry very far. Well a few days ago while doing some last minute Christmas shopping, I stopped and looked at possibly getting my dad a new flashlight and I found a LED conversion kit for the "AA" Maglite for $5 (Wal-Mart) and since I keep one in my car I picked one up. I love it! Then I found this article today.
Maglite, makers of all things police and security guards use, is venturing out into the world of LEDs. Seems a brighter, better MAG is in the works, as the company's website is saying that in early 2006, MAG will start introducing MAG-LED products with LED technology. Made for both professional and consumer use, the new MAGs will be stylish, brighter, and are designed to last a lifetime.

RIAA in Mother Russia?
When will the RIAA crusades ever end? In their latest move, the association is putting pressure on the US Senate to help deal with the piracy situation in Russia. According to a letter the RIAA has managed to get a bill sponsored in the Senate that will get Russia thrown out of the World Trade Organisation if it doesn't take action to purge the nation of its piracy antics. The RIAA wants Russia to know that unless it submits to its demands to stop acting as a safe haven for pirates then there is no chance of it getting decent trading conditions with the US.

Wishing on a Star
This hasn't been the best of years for me. Don't get me wrong, I have been blessed with a good job and a wonderful family, but I feel like there is more awaiting for me somewhere. As I sit out on my front porch, I often look to the heavens and gaze at the stars (a habit I developed while out in the field in the Army), and I feel as if there is a peace up there that guides me to my decisions. Over the past few days I have seen two shooting stars and to me that is amazing. I can't remember ever seeing one here other than when I was a child only 6 years old, hopping off of the school bus to find my neighbor with a telescope, telling me to come see this. It was 1986 and for the first time in my life I saw a shooting star, but it wasn't just any star, it was in fact Haley's Comet. Imagine know being 25 years old and realizing that the next time I get a chance to see that comet will be when I am 82 years old. Seeing Haley's Comet twice in one lifetime is an amazing opportunity and maybe I'll get lucky. However seeing two comets so close together here recently has really been awesome. You have to be looking at just the right spot at just the right time to see one.
This speaks to me. It means something, what, I do not know, but there is a wave of change surrounding me now. I have to make some difficult decisions in the months to come and I have prayed about these matters and in my mind it all seems so clear. There is a chance to start all over with my life and progress in my career.

Hackers decode Xbox 360 discs
Some folks who have been busy hacking apart the new Xbox 360 console from Microsoft claim to have worked out how to dump the contents of game discs for the system, allowing them to be copied and examined. However, the hackers have yet to work out how to get these copies to play. Team PI Coder - a Dutch hacker group - has posted details of the file system for the game discs, along with a program to extract files from them and example source code. Should Microsoft be worried? Well, not too much, according to Gamesindustry.biz.
At present, there is no way to run copied games or any form of unauthorised code on the Xbox 360, and the cracking of the disc format is a relatively simple move - since the Xbox 360 merely uses a modified version of the discs used by the original Xbox, whose format is widely understood.
In fact, although several teams around the world are known to be working on breaking the security of the Xbox 360, so far little progress has been made in this regard. The original Xbox was one of the most widely hacked consoles ever, thanks to its PC-style architecture and weak security - both things that have changed on the Xbox 360.
WOW Reaches 5 Million Users

Seemingly the world's most popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft continues to exceed the expectations of Blizzard, who claim it has a strong presence across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. The game has an add-on pack, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, set for release next year.
Lexar Media to add Google apps to their USB flash drives
Lexar Media Inc. is to add Google applications, including a toolbar and search function, to its USB flash drives. The new drives will be available starting in January 2006. The company claims the move will make it easier for customers to find data on their drives.
"While these popular applications have traditionally been available on the Web directly from Google and other Web affiliates, offering them on a Lexar JumpDrive provides a new channel to reach customers," said Steffen Hellmold, vice president of USB flash drives at Lexar.

Glutton for Punishment
I'm serious, we pay their wages and we should get credit on effort!
Part of the Process
Appian Corp., a Vienna, Va.-based BPM provider, offers software that helps agencies manage their procurements. The product, which is similar to other business process management offerings, features a "dashboard" that tells users where requests and tasks stand and includes potentially useful information, such as a pie chart identifying funding sources. Managers have access to a customized workflow map, which visually shows the steps in the process, from opening a new acquisition request to validating funding and notifying vendors. "The tools we provide . . . connect people and data systems, and measure how well they work together and optimize them," says Michael Beckley, vice president of Appian's product strategy.
If there's a delay, the manager can call the person responsible, or reassign tasks if an employee is overburdened; they also can check that the rules are being followed. Some steps, such as the submission of information to FedBizOpps, the government Web site for posting bid solicitations, are automated. Business process management programs usually are Web-based and interact with applications already on clients' computers, such as e-mail and spreadsheets.

1 down 1 to go
I took my final for this semester in the computer class tonight and if I didn't score perfect, I'll demand a recount. It was a cakewalk of a class about the internet and was a new requirement for my degree, so I went ahead and took it.
My math final is Wednesday night and it will take nothing short of a miracle for me to pass it. I suck at math and hate it for the most part.
Next semester I think I'll only take one class to give myself a little break. I should have stayed in college the first time. Kids, let this be a lesson to you. GO TO COLLEGE FIRST, then get a job!

BAD Angus
Well I guess we all have been there before. Waking up in a strange place surrounded by beer bottles, with a weird fucking hat on. Ok so I may be all alone there, but dammit at least I admit it!
It reminds me of the time (times) I would start out partying in the barracks and then just realize that I'm sitting on someones porch chatting away still drinking, then awake to find myself in a strange _______ (fill in the blank, Bed, Car, Ditch).
Ahh, good times.

I never thought I'd see the day. Denny's no longer has a smoking section. My once favorite place for the late night snack has took away one of my only pleasures.
It's time for a boycott. Since I do not cook, I used to spend more money here than anyone, hell I paid the damn wages around here.

RIAA Bans Telling Friends About Songs
The Recording Industry Association of America announced Tuesday that it will be taking legal action against anyone discovered telling friends, acquaintances, or associates about new songs, artists, or albums. "We are merely exercising our right to defend our intellectual properties from unauthorized peer-to-peer notification of the existence of copyrighted material," a press release signed by RIAA anti-piracy director Brad Buckles read. "We will aggressively prosecute those individuals who attempt to pirate our property by generating 'buzz' about any proprietary music, movies, or software, or enjoy same in the company of anyone other than themselves." RIAA attorneys said they were also looking into the legality of word-of-mouth "favorites-sharing" sites, such as coffee shops, universities, and living rooms.

Podcast - Word of the Year
Runners-up for the 2005 Word of the Year include:
bird flu (an often fatal flu virus of birds, esp. poultry, that is transmissible from them to humans, in whom it may also prove fatal)
ICE (an entry stored in one's cellular phone that provides emergency contact information)
IDP (internally displaced person; someone forced to relocate within a country because of a natural disaster or civil unrest)
IED (improvised explosive device, such as a car bomb)
lifehack (a more efficient or effective way of completing an everyday task: "I found a great lifehack for getting a cheap hotel room.")
persistent vegetative state (a condition in which a patient recovering from a coma retains reflex responses and may appear wakeful, but has no cognitive functions or other evidence of cerebral cortical activity)
reggaeton (a Latin American dance music which combines elements of reggae music with hip-hop and rap.)
rootkit (software installed on a computer by someone other than the owner, intended to conceal other programs or processes, files or system data.)
squick (cause immediate and thorough revulsion: "was anyone else squicked by our waiter's piercings?")
sudoku (a logic-based puzzle consisting of squares that form grids within a grid. Into each smaller grid, the numerals 1 through 9 are entered but not repeated, and they may not be repeated in any row or column of the larger grid.)
trans fat (fat containing trans-fatty acids, considered unhealthier than other dietary fats.)
Erin McKean, editor in chief of the New Oxford American Dictionary, said: "Podcast was considered for inclusion last year, but we found that not enough people were using it, or were even familiar with the concept. This year it's a completely different story. The word has finally caught up with the rest of the iPod phenomenon."
"Choosing the word of the year is incredibly difficult," said McKean. "Not just because of the enormous amount of data we look at-everything from blogs to technical journals to suggestions sent to dictionaries@oup.com-but because everyone has such strong opinions about what makes a word Word of the Year material. You'd be amazed at how hard our editors campaign for their favorites. I'm surprised nobody tried to bribe me -- except that the only thing I really want is more cool new words!"
Martha the Lush
Katie and Matt watched with their eyes wide open as she dumped 4 cups each of four different types of alcohol into her homemade egg nog and she even said that is was great for entertaining, just serve this to anyone over the age of 18 as they come in for the party and they will be having a great time.....NO SHIT, they would be drunk off their asses after 1 glass, and she even seemed to encourage that. A few moments later she realized what she said about the drinking age and corrected herself.
The funny part was when Anne and Al tried her egg nog and nearly spit it out because of all the alcohol. Al even said, please do not drink this near an open flame.
I think the jailbird may be off her rocker just a little and if I was a betting man I would say she had already had a few glasses before the show, she just kept rambling on and on and they had to keep interupting her. I guess you had to see it, but it was funny.

Verizon To Offer TV Together With EV-DO
Verizon today announced they will use Qualcomm's Media FLO (forward link only) technology to bring TV to their EV-DO networks. FLO is a streaming protocol that allows a carrier to broadcast to many subscribers simultaneously by letting the subscriber grab a stream that is already in progress and any user can instantly start viewing. Verizon will launch the service using a 700 MHz network owned by Qualcomm, the final specs and standards of which were only recently ratified. They will begin by launching FLO broadcasts in about half of their EV-DO markets and then slowly expand the network to cover all EV-DO areas. The initial launches should begin sometime next year.

Cybercrime pays off more than drug trafficking
(REUTERS) - Global cybercrime generated a higher payback than drug trafficking in 2004 and is set to grow even further as the use of technology expands in developing countries, a security expert said today.
No country is immune from cybercrime, which includes corporate espionage, child pornography, stock manipulation, extortion and piracy, said Valerie McNiven, who advises the U.S. Department of the Treasury on the problem. “Last year was the first year that proceeds from cybercrime were greater than proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs, and that was, I believe, over $105 billion,” McNiven said. “Cybercrime is moving at such a high speed that law enforcement cannot catch up with it.”
For example, Web sites used by fraudsters for “phishing” -- the practice of tricking computer users into revealing their bank details and other personal data -- only stay on the Internet for a maximum of 48 hours, she said.
Asked if there is any evidence of links between the funding of terrorism and cybercrime, McNiven said, “There is evidence of links between them. But what’s more important is our refusal or failure to create secure systems. We can do it, but it’s an issue of costs.”
McNiven, a former electronic finance and security specialist for the World Bank, was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at a conference on information security in the banking sector. Developing countries that lack the virtual financial systems available elsewhere are easier prey for cybercriminals looking for quick gain.
“When you have identity thefts or corruption and manipulation of information [in developing countries], it becomes almost more important because ... their systems start getting compromised from the get-go,” McNiven said. “Another area that begins to expand is human trafficking and pornography, because both of these become so much available once you have a communication ability.”

Professional Driver
Have you ever noticed that on almost every automobile commercial, the fine print says "professional driver, closed course". I want that job. Even when the car is just driving down the road, nothing special, no high speeds, just cruising down the road. I wonder how much they get paid?

Wendy and Darian
Celebrating their 15th anniversary. She spent the whole day away from home and had no idea. When she came home and seen all the cars outside, she started to cry. As she came into the house Darian asked her to marry him again.
It was a good party and it meant the world to her. I'm very proud of them both and thanks Darian, for taking care of my little big sis.

Worse than a woman
I'll have some pictures from the party, but I do want to say congradulations to my sister and my brother in law. It will be there 15th wedding anniversary. My sister is my best friend and as we grow older we also grow closer.
Love ya Sis!
